“You too seem to get along pretty well,” said my father as I came back to the kitchen.

“He’s a good man,” I replied.

“I know.”

I looked at my father, almost surprised. He could see that already? That was a very good sign. He had only met him an hour ago, and he could already tell that Alex was good to me. That was impressive.

“How is Sophie?” he asked.

“She’s doing fine. Did I tell you I think she has a boyfriend?”

I told him the story about Josh, how they had met at the mall and kept texting until late at night. They saw each other all the time, and I couldn’t keep Sophie in the house anymore. She was always gone, doing something with him. Now that she was back in class, it was even worse.

“She’s much better than she was here. The change was good for her.”

I couldn’t keep off the topic much longer.

“You should come too, Dad. I’m worried about you.”

“Elsie…” he started. I didn’t want to fight with him, but I could feel it coming, especially after I had almost lost him to a heart attack. “…you know I can’t leave this house.”

He had told me the exact same thing last time I had asked him and all the times before that. He kept referring to my mother and how he felt connected to her when he was here, but that wasn’t good enough anymore. He could have died, and I was too far from him. I had known when I had left that this would probably be hard. I needed some change, and moving a hundred kilometers away wasn’t going to do it.

“Please, Dad. You need someone to take care of you,” I begged him. “And Smithfield is great. It’s quiet and peaceful. You would love it there.”

“I can’t,” he replied.

If death wasn’t going to change his mind, I didn’t know what would. I had inherited my stubbornness from him, I knew that for sure. Finding another way to convince him was going to be hard, but I was up for a challenge.

“What about you? How are you doing?” he asked, changing the subject. I decided to give up this time, but I was going to find something to change his mind sooner or later.

“I’m good. Work is… interesting. I have to be connected to my computer all the time. Otherwise, my agent gets upset.”

“Joan?” he asked. I was surprised he remembered her name.

“Yes,” I replied. “And tomorrow I have my book release. How do you feel about coming?”

“What time is it at??”

“Starts at two. It’s at the public library.”

“It’s not like I have anything better to do.” I knew he liked coming to my book releases. He had always done it whenever he could. I was going to be busy, and I wouldn’t be able to keep an eye on him all day long, but I knew he would manage.

“Great!” I said with a smile.
